Processing Utility Grant Applications for our elderly, single moms and other Limited-Income Neighbors.
According to the November 2021 consumer price index from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, energy prices are up 33.3% on the year/ Fuel oil is nearly 60% more expensive than last year, electricity is up 6.5%, and natural gas rose by more than 25%. The increases wreaked havoc on household budgets for families who were unprepared for these increases.
Studies have shown that financial hardship directly affects academic achievement. Over half of the children in low-income families, including grandparents raising grandchildren experience utility disconnections, which eliminates resources, such as electricity for computers, water to maintain good hygiene, to enjoy a healthy meal, and for having a comfortable and well-lit study environment.
